Mary Alexander
Mary is a seasoned healthcare compliance and coding professional with more than 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry. She currently serves as Director of Compliance at West Virginia University Health System, where she provides strategic leadership in regulatory compliance, coding integrity, and auditing practices. Prior to joining WVU Health System, Mary spent 13 years with The Johns Hopkins Health System as Senior Chargemaster Coordinator in the Department of Casemix Information Management. In this role, she oversaw the charge description master for multiple facilities, including Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC, and All Children's Hospital in Florida. Her work focused on implementing new services, strengthening policies and procedures, and ensuring accurate and compliant charge capture systems.
Mary's career also includes five years as a Regulatory Compliance Manage with MedStar Health, where she further developed her expertise in regulatory oversight, medical coding, and auditing. She has contributed to industry advancement through her participation in Maryland Hospital Association and Health Services Cost Review Commission committees, supporting initiatives related to conversion and strategic charging methodologies.
An accomplished educator, Mary is licensed by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) to teach the Professional Medical Coding Curriculum and holds multiple professional credentials. She earned her bachelor’s degree in health systems Facilities Management and a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Baltimore, where she graduated as a member of Upsilon Phi Delta and actively participated in several leadership organizations.
Mary is an active member of key professional organizations, including the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). She brings a wealth of knowledge, practical insight, and leadership experience to medical coding education and training programs.
